Flatåsen & Romoslia: For families and nature lovers

Flatåsen, or «The flat hill», is a suburb around 10 kilometers south of the Trondheim city center. Flatåsen, which used to be farmland, is today a large suburb that’s still growing. Its location close to nature and the large number of walkways away from the roads, are some of the highlights of Flatåsen.
If you walk or bike towards the city center from Flatåsen, the first suburb you reach is Romolslia. A smaller, but still booming, suburb. In the 50s Romolslia was home to one single farm, today the suburb has its own school, kindergarten and stores.
Getting there
If you’re going to Flatåsen, you can take the metro bus number 2 to Tonstadkrysset, and then a shuttle bus to Flatåsen. There’s also the option to take bus number 23 from Pirbadet to Flatåsen that goes through Byåsen, though this bus doesn’t take you to the very top of Flatåsen. The bus to Romolslia is bus number 20.
There is also the option of biking; when going downhill, towards the city center, it’s a fast and fun way to travel. When going back again, you might need an electric bike for all the hills (though it’s a good workout if you opt for an old fashioned one).
Endless hiking opportunities
In Flatåsen you can find little neighborhood forests perfect for playtime for both children and stick-loving dogs. There’s often benches or places to build a fire in these woods, making it a perfect spot to grill. Leirelv-stien (The Leirelv-trail) is also a good trail for shorter walks.
If you’re in shape for a longer hike you can walk to Granåsen from Flatåsen. From there you can walk to Leirsjøen, a lake close to Granåsen that used to be the reserve water supply for the city. Today swimming, fishing and camping is allowed, making it a great place to go camping for beginners and families. In the summertime goats walk freely around the lake, in the winter time you can ice skate on the water (if the ice is thick enough). Another lake that’s not very far from Flatåsen is Haukvatnet, a popular swimming spot in the summer.
From Granåsen you can hike or ski to several scenic places. Rønningen farm is a great place to go for a Sunday hike. Here you can grab a coffee and enjoy some waffles in a cozy environment.
Romolslia is a bit further away from Bymarka, but there are still great opportunities for hiking. A short walk to the lookout point marked “Utsiktsbenk Romoslia” in google maps, is a good option for kids.
If you enjoy fishing, a small lake called Andedammen (The duck pond), is a great place to go. You can find green areas and playgrounds in several places in and around the suburb.
By using resources like UT you can locate trails and hikes in your neighbourhood.

From farmland to suburbs
Developing farmland
The lower part of Flatåsen, near Leirelva, was developed as early as the 1800s, driven by industries harnessing the river's waterfalls. Flatåsen was originally land owned by five farms.
The construction of the Flatåsen neighborhood, as we know it today, got planned in 1965, and building began in the 70s, when the government decided that they wanted to use the farmers' land to start urban development.
The farmers of Flatåsen would be millionaires if they were to sell their land today, however in the 70s it was a different story. In addition to apartment buildings and row houses, the neighbourhood now also houses businesses and commercial areas.
A green lung of history
In Firbladskogen, a green forest between Romolslia and Flatåsen in Trondheim, you can find something called Hulveger (Sunken roads). These roads, shaped by generations of travel, are valuable cultural landmarks that offer insights into the past. Firbladskogen, with its mix of forest, meadows, and trails, has been a part of local transportation and timber activities. One particular sunken road is emphasized as a unique cultural and historical feature, dating back to pre-Christian times.
