Trøndelag and the Trondheim region in particular has become known as a food destination over the years, winning awards and hosting exciting festivals for diverse culinary tastes. However, many of these restaurants and festivals put a strain on the wallet! What does Trondheim have to offer those of us who are after a more budget-friendly experience?
What can you really get on an evening in town? Perhaps you are planning for a first date, or a dinner and a movie. Here is a guide to different foodie activities you can get up to on an evening in Trondheim, prices included!

Restaurants/Experiences:
If you are in the mood for something Tex-Mex on your evening out, try La Border! You can get burritos, nachos, or quesadillas for 189-229 per plate. They serve churros for dessert and even carry the Mexican brand soft drink Jarritos! We recommend the following combo: Pork Pastor, Jarritos Mango, and a plate of Mexican churros for a total of 337 NOK
If you are in the mood for some vegan food, we highly recommend the restaurant Mat fra Hagen located on Thomas Angells street. They have a delicious, varied buffet for 199. They serve spring rolls, cauliflower steak, quinoa and bean salads, veggie burritos, sliders, among other things! If you are not in the mood for a full buffet, we recommend their Classic Burger for 159. They also happen to have the best sweet potato fries in town. For drinks, they have a small selection of alcohol as well as flavored San Pellegrino.
A burger, plus fries and drink will cost you 283 NOK
Maybe you’ve had a long, cold day and want to warm up in a cozy restaurant with a book, or someone you love. There is no better place in town to do so than Koie Ramen. Despite its very small space, they have managed to make this restaurant one of the coziest spots in town through their use of lighting and simple wood panels. The ramen contains real bone broth, a necessity for delicious-tasting ramen! Their ramen, whether veggie or meat-based, is between 180-200. More if you want extras like mushrooms or extra meat. Their karage appetizer is easily the best fried chicken in Trondheim (this coming from an American). They also serve sake or beer! We recommend: Tonkotsu with extra nori, with a side of karage for 230 NOK

A relative newcomer to the restaurant world in Trondheim is a little place in Bakklandet called burger.no. They serve only three burgers, but we promise they have everything you could want for flavor. You can choose a veggie, chicken, or beef burger, with a side of fries and/or dip. They have some alcoholic beverages as well as a handful of soda choices.
We recommend: the chicken burger, fries, and a soda of your choice for a total of 287 NOK
You can get the largest serving of any food in Trondheim at Koh-i-nor by ordering their veggie plate for 237. At least we are pretty sure. This plate includes three types of curry, rice, raita, a huge samosa, and is served with papadums. Add your choice of naan for 39 and you’ll have more than enough, no matter how hungry you are! That’s a total of 276 NOK for a delicious Indian meal!

Maybe you are in the mood for something with more historical Trondheim flavor. Consider visiting the famous Bakklandet Skydsstasjon located in the heart of Bakklandet, just south of the Old Town Bridge. Their authentic Norwegian dishes include: reindeer stew, fish soup, or a herring plate. If you are feeling brave or just low on iron, try their warm liver paté! This is the real Norwegian experience! Their plates cost between 196-336 each. We tend to find that they serve a bit more food than most restaurants around town.
Try out their soup of the week and finish off with a cup of coffee and a waffle with warm brown cheese for 324 NOK
Other tips to save:
1. Consider drinking water, or opting for soda instead of alcohol. Some places charge as much as 150,- for an alcoholic drink. The tap-water in Norway might be the best tap-water in the world and it's 100% safe to drink!
2. Many restaurants in Trondheim have a Meal of the Day, try that! It can be a great way to try something new on the menu.
3. In the summertime, opt for grabbing a froyo at 7/11 instead of dessert prepared at the restaurant. Then you can take a walk along the river!
4. Endelig Mandag, or "Finally Monday", is a weekly campaign where multiple restaurants in the city centre offer a quality dish at the set price of 175,- Every Monday between 4pm and 6.30pm.
